the classic
tuscany and umbria

This retreat bases itself around the beautiful hilltop town of Lippiano.  Dipping in and out of Tuscany into Umbria, soaking up the stunning scenery and quiet roads, this six day tour takes you to some of the area's most beautiful medieval towns and villages visiting some of our favourite cafes and restaurants along the way and will give you a real taster of what our little pocket of paradise has to offer.

There are quite a few climbs on this particular tour which will be a stern test for our riders but not to worry, our staff are on hand all the way to boost morale or stop off for a breather if necessary.  Our big day out will be a long ride around the beautiful lake of Trasimeno checking out the site where Hannibal and his Carthaginians slayed the Romans (in terms of the men involved, the largest ambush in military history!).

DAY 2
For our first day out we will be tackling this little beauty of a ride.  With just over 47kms of undulating roads, iconic scenery with a handful of testers along the route.  As we spin out of Lippiano it's a 5kms descent to the valley floor below and on through the surrounding fields as we make our way to the first of our leg testers and the short climb into Padonchia.  Here at the summit we are suitably rewarded with the beautiful vista of the nearby towns of Monterchi and Citerna.  Our journey continues through steady rollers as we make our way through the farmlands of Catigliano and Scoiano before the first proper test of this tour approaches as we make our way up the steady climb to the picture perfect Tuscan town of Anghiari for some well deserved refreshments.  This beautiful little town is well worth an extended stay, and a photo opportunity, before we saddle up for our homeward leg.  Any weary legs will be pleased to hear it's a fairly flat return as we make our way through the secret maze of beautifully tended farmland that surround the lesser known villages of San Leo, Mancino, Gricignano and Pistrino.  As we cross the border between Umbria and Tuscany we will catch our second glimpse of Monterchi where we will stop off for lunch after which it's just the big climb home to the villa as we make the final 5kms of ascent back to Lippiano.

DAY 3
Our big day out today so we will be setting off early to get to the beautiful Lago Trasimeno.  This is where Tuscany spills over into Umbria.  Italy's fourth largest lake is a prime spot for us to get off the well-trodden trail for a few hours.  Around this beautiful lake, we will be cycling through silver green olive groves, vines and ancient woods of oak and cypress.  Sunflower fields frame the castle topped medieval towns of  Castiglione del Lago and Passignano, where we will be stopping off for refreshments along the way and then lunch high on the hillside in a fabulous restaurant overlooking the lake.  Back home for dinner.

DAY 4
For our last day we have a shorter ride of only 34kms but don't be fooled, with just under 900 metres of elevation gain, this is a little brute of a finale.  As we make our familiar way downhill and out of Lippiano we are only 2kms into the ride before we are out of the saddle and pushing our way up the first of five hill sections on today's route.  It's then up down, up down for the next 6 or so kms before the big one up a further 4kms to the summit of Monte Santa Maria Tiberina.  The mind blowing views atop this peak are truly stunning and what better way to contemplate your recent struggles on the bike than with a well deserved cappuccino while surveying the iconic Tuscan and Umbria scenery.  Once fully rested, it's back into the saddle for a 10kms downhill blast making our way through the sleepy little back roads of Lerchi and Mezzavia. With 23kms behind us now it's a steady final 11kms as we make our way up and down and back up again to the villa in the beautiful hamlet of Lippiano.
